Mini Focus Group: On-Demand Media Sponsorship
Hi MeFiles!
If you've got a few minutes, we could use your help and input.
We've started a new section of the blog titled In the Lab / Up Our Sleeve where we will occasionally highlight some of the great new features and applications we are working on and ask for your feedback.
We think you'll like this one, but want to hear from you on the direction we're taking. (We want to get this right!)
Above is a brief video depicting one use of our upcoming video adget (in final beta testing now).
The basic concept:
- Advertisers want to sponsor your media.
- Throw in Internet videos, blogs, social media, and DVRs, it is now impossible for them to guess what you want to watch.
- So why not let them sponsor your downloads by sending money to your paypal to cover your purchases?
So, please (pretty please), take a look at the video, and then answer these questions in the comments below. Also, please also feel free to add any other thoughts or suggestions you have.
- How would feel about advertisers who are willing to sponsor your downloads and other online activities and micro-purchases?
- Would you tend to buy (legally purchase) more media from online sources like iTunes, Amazon, and others?
- Does the concept of your attention as currency make sense to you?
Thanks everyone!
Team YouData
P.S. We know that everyone would like MORE ADS! They are fun aren't they? They're coming! As our MeFile population continues to grow, and as consumers like you give advertisers a better way to reach them, we are starting to really get the attention of more and more smart advertisers. Let's keep it going! Please help keep spreading the word about our little experiment. The more MeFiles we have, the more ads we all attract. We at YouData are extremely grateful to all of you early MeFiles for believing in what we are doing here. Thank you for helping us fix advertising!

I don't think this Media Sponsorship would actually encourage me to purchase (more) online downloads, but I do like the idea of paid video ads relevant to my MeFile. In other words, I would definitely watch the advertisements, but I would greatly prefer that the money just be credited directly to my account, instead of subsidizing online media purchases. In fact, I would prefer to just have the video ads available directly from the YouData application or website, and completely separate from what downloads I choose to buy. I do hope video ads are introduced soon, as making $0.09 per week is rather discouraging. Thanks for keeping us updated with what's currently under development.
I think the idea is sound. I would probably purchase more music/video downloads if they were covered. I know often times when I visit sites, I have ads pop up, and not only do I not look at them, if I see the promoted product I avoid it out of spite. But if the ad is relevant (and I know it's coming), I wouldn't mind watching and purchasing eventually. Having ads directed at me from my mefile, for my attention seems like a very fair trade. Although, I think the get paid with out a "purchase" option should not be taken out.
The idea is really good but I don't want to have to download my media no matter what. As Nate said, I'd rather have it go straight to my account, giving me more freedom to do as I wish with my "attention money".
* How would feel about advertisers who are willing to sponsor your downloads and other online activities and micro-purchases?
Through my experience with YouData's click-through web ads, I think I would have an improved opinion of advertisers who are willing to sponsor purchases through providing ad-watching opportunities. As a consumer, it would make me feel like the advertiser valued by time and attention, rather than taking it for granted.
* Would you tend to buy (legally purchase) more media from online sources like iTunes, Amazon, and others?
Absolutely! It would absolutely be worth it to me if I could download a favorite song or two and pay for it simply by watching some ads. Sometimes I'll decide not to make a purchase, simply because of the hassle of digging out my wallet and entering all my credit card info. This opportunity would remove that barrier, too.
* Does the concept of your attention as currency make sense to you?
Definitely. My time is valuable. It's about time that advertisers recognize that.
I like this one,it taught me some things to.
Definitely think it is a good idea. I tend to weigh some purchases against exactly how long I have to work to buy it. If I could watch targeted ads, right then, to pay for the music and other legal purchases I would, without a doubt, buy more!
* How would feel about advertisers who are willing to sponsor your downloads and other online activities and micro-purchases?
I would feel great! This is an AWESOME idea. I purchase so much stuff from iTunes and Amazon already.
* Would you tend to buy (legally purchase) more media from online sources like iTunes, Amazon, and others?
Yes, it would encourage more "legal" downloads. Not to say I download illegally, but this would certainly play a vital role in my acquisition of digital media.
* Does the concept of your attention as currency make sense to you?
This idea makes sense from all aspects. I rarely watch "live" TV, i usually record it on the DVR and fast forward through the commercials because I don't want to deal with them (in the sense that they're usually not relevant for me). Add to this the fact that I am able to earn money, or other goods by simply watching something that's targeted specifically for me, and I'm a happy dude!
I say add me to the beta testing!

I think it's a good idea. I purchase quite a bit from Amazon.
I think this is a wonderful idea and i would love to use this . I know i would purchase more if I had this option. Yes, this make perfect sense, I often dvr most of the shows i watch and i never watch the comercials. If I had this I could watch the ones that are just for me , the ones i want to watch. And the added bonus of getting paid to do it is great. Oh, and where do i sign up!
I like this idea a lot. I would like it to be available for other possible "micro" purchases as mentioned above. I do purhcase a lot of my music and video online from iTunes, WalMart, and Amazon.
I like the idea. I Wish I had more adds to watch like it shows. I only get like 2 adds per week and I filled out every survey questtion.
If you could make synergies with big media companies so that the downloads would be discounted (and not just subsidized), then I would be interested. For instance, if an advertiser is willing to pay me 10 cents to view their video ad, I would rather just have 10 cents cash than 10 cents off a download. But if an advertiser was willing to pay me 10 cents to view their ad, and then discount the download a further 10 cents, then I would be interested. This would be possible if content providers were the ones who were purchasing advertising. For instance, if I view an ad from record label X, I can either get 10 cents cash, or get 20 cents off a download from any of record label X's artists.
The same idea could work for traditional advertisers. Thinkgeek.com (for example) could pay me 10 cents for just viewing an ad, but then they could also discount a purchase I made through a Youdata ad or give me a YouData cash kickback for purchasing products from them. The more synergies are created, the more value can flow to advertisers (and therefore, the more advertisers are willing to pay Youdata users).
I like the idea of being paid for watching the ads but I would probably rather be paid than have credit for itune or amazon. Although I would probably use it occasionally.
Its been 3 months, still nothing? Also whats up with the few ads. i think i might have made 25 cents in 4 months. my files complete and everything.
I think it's AWESOME bring it into action...
I agree with Kate, and Paul and mostly everybody here :)
I truly hope the video ads idea works out though. Id love to get paid automatically through YOUDATA for watching video ads (some are actually entertaining). Hope the best.
You have really great taste on catch article titles, even when you are not interested in this topic you push to read it
I want to make sure I understand the process correctly, I go to download the movie, for example, and it costs me $3. I can then go to my you data account and through them watch relevant ads that then discount the cost of the download through Amazon.
Can I just watch relevant video ads anytime for cash?
I love the idea of video ads. It is a way to get me to watch commercials instead of skipping past them and they would be specifically chosen according to my mefile. I prefer to watch video ads for cash deposited directly into my account, not for downloads. Getting free downloads for watching ads is just another way for the industry to control how I spend my money, Is it not? It may or may not increase my use of legal downloads. That would depend on if I was in need of a download. The concept of my attention equaling "currency", not product, is one of the best things I have heard of, sign me up now!
I like the idea of video ads of course everyone likes getting money for anything so watching something that most people dont like would open a new door to people watching more ads.
